How to Apply to Nursing Programs in Australia

My personal experience

Back then I made the bold decision to take a leave of absence from school in Taiwan and started frantically researching and applying to nursing schools in Australia on my own. I can honestly say I did everything DIY, including the visa. It may sound impressive now, but looking back, using a study-abroad agency has a lot of advantages too, and you don't have to stress yourself out. I later found out that many of my friends went through agencies, and a lot of them even got scholarships with a 25% tuition reduction!! Anyway, once I'd picked the state I wanted and a school I liked, I started preparing documents and applied directly on the school's website. Along the way the school will email you (good English practice~) asking for some additional documents, and in the end I got the offer! After you confirm the Offer you get a COE, and then you can apply for the student visa!

I think the English requirement is where most people get stuck during the application. Now they require IELTS 7777, which is really not easy. I fought my way through it several times in Taiwan too (I kept retaking it like crazy because I didn't want to do the bridging language course, since it's so expensive…). Personally, if your scores are already close to 7777, I think it's worth taking the test a few more times in Taiwan. One test usually costs about the same as one week of language classes in Australia, so I'd rather take it three more times than spend an extra 12 weeks in a language course. But it's a matter of opinion. Language courses have their benefits too: you get more familiar with how classes work there and with the local culture, so you won't get a big culture shock as soon as you arrive in Australia!

In short, whether to apply yourself or through an agency, and whether to keep retaking the English test or take a language course in Australia, depends a lot on your own experience and needs. Everyone's situation is different, so think it through carefully or talk it over with someone before you decide~

Let's get to it!!!

Application process: choose a program → submit your application → apply for a visa → enroll

1. Decide which program you want

The process isn't as complicated as you might think. Once you know your direction, you can get there step by step!

Common nursing programs in Australia:

  • Bachelor of Nursing: the most common, three years full-time; after graduating you can become an RN (Registered Nurse)

  • Diploma of Nursing: about 1.5–2 years; after graduating you can work as an EN (Enrolled Nurse)

  • Master of Nursing/Graduate Entry (graduate program): about 2 years; if you already have a different background (Bachelor Degree), you can consider a two-year master's program

2. Meet the entry requirements

Schools usually require:

  • Education: a Taiwanese high school or junior college diploma or higher; for bachelor's programs you need the equivalent of Year 12

  • English: usually IELTS 7.0 (no band below 7.0), or OET B.

  • Other documents: transcripts, a copy of your passport, a Personal Statement ……

3. Choose schools and submit your applications

Many Australian universities have nursing programs, such as QUT, UQ, Griffith, Deakin, UTS…

The steps are roughly:

  1. Pick a few schools → check the admission requirements on their websites.

  2. Prepare your documents (transcripts, English test scores).

  3. You can apply directly on the school's website or get help from an agency.

4. Get your offer & apply for a student visa

  • If the school accepts you, they'll send you an offer letter.

  • After you pay tuition, you get your CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment).

  • Then you can use the CoE to apply for a student visa (Subclass 500).

5. Start your nursing journey

After you enroll, remember:

  • Australian nursing programs have a lot of placements, so get your health check, police clearance and vaccination records ready early (*you can request the English versions in advance while you're still in Taiwan)

  • After graduating you can apply for AHPRA registration and officially become an RN.

A few last words

Getting ready to study abroad is often full of uncertainty and stress. Sometimes you see other people living their lives and traveling while you're studying for tests and preparing documents, and it's hard not to feel worn out or doubt yourself.

A lot of things seem hard in the moment, but when you look back, you'll see that all that effort was slowly adding up and eventually took you further.

As long as you keep going and move toward your goal step by step, one day you'll be standing where you once dreamed of being, looking back and thanking the version of yourself who didn't give up.
