Teacher Ai's 4 Tricks for Using ChatGPT to Score High on GRE Writing

A recent GRE high-score post by a student who got a 4 in writing on the first try shared how he used ChatGPT to revise his essays. (This one: https://www.gre-info.com.tw/rod_325/ )

ChatGPT is handy, but that student also pointed out a gap between the scores ChatGPT gives and the official scores. As a writing teacher, I'm of course grateful that he found my human grading more accurate than the computer's and in line with the official score. But I'd also like to take this chance to share the ways of using ChatGPT that actually pay off for you. Give ChatGPT the right prompts and it works like magic, transforming your essay in an instant.

🪄 Trick 1: Fix your grammar

Use this prompt: Correct the grammatical errors in the following essay: “文章全文”

This is faster than swapping essays in a study group, only for your peer "teacher" to miss mistakes or get them wrong (Oops!). Remember to compare the corrected version with your original word by word. If you only read the corrected version, you still won't know where you went wrong.

🪄 Trick 2: Level up your vocabulary

Next, on the same page, enter another prompt: Give me an upgraded version of the essay with advanced GRE-level vocabulary.

ChatGPT can raise your word choice to a 5+ level. Grab a highlighter and mark the advanced, reusable words, phrases and sentence patterns, then force yourself to use them in your next essay. Use them long enough and they're yours!

🪄 Trick 3: Generate an all-purpose template

Highlighting is really just "building your own template"; if you don't know how, ChatGPT has you covered.

On the same page, enter: Formulate a writing phrase bank from the previous essay. and you'll get a bank of sentence patterns with no plagiarism issues.

🪄 Trick 4: Come up with reasons

The "no ideas" problem that bugs students the most can also be solved with ChatGPT. Take this prompt, for example: Governments should not fund any scientific research whose consequences are unclear.

Enter: Provide reasons that support the following prompt: "題幹" and you'll get reasons for agreeing.

Enter: Provide reasons that refute the following prompt: "題幹" and you'll get reasons against.

What? No examples? On the same page, enter: Give me examples to illustrate each of the reasons.

Thank you, technology, and wow, technology. Hasn't practicing essays gotten a lot easier? But your brain is a good thing, so please try to think for yourself as much as you can, and only ask the computer for reasons and examples when you really can't, OK?
