In TOEFL Speaking Scoring, Which Matters More: Content or Delivery?

Hi everyone, I'm David, an intensive course consultant at SK2 TOEFL (TOEFL iBT 119/120).

As a teacher who has graded recordings from nearly 10,000 students, I can say with confidence:

👉 Delivery matters more!

---

What is “delivery”?

It isn't the “accent” most students think of first, and it isn't “speaking fluently.” Delivery is actually scored on:

* Whether your “pronunciation” is correct, especially vowels

* Whether your intonation varies and sounds confident

* Whether your pauses are natural and your pace is right

As you can imagine, within your first few sentences these give the rater an “impression score”!

If you get stuck a lot, keep saying uh..., speak in a flat tone, or mumble, the listener will only reluctantly keep going without wanting to finish, and won't easily give you a high score.

---

That's also why many students actually “have content in their answers” yet are stuck at around 20.

Many students think it's enough to “finish the answer” and never think about “how to say it,” so:

* Their sentences are perfectly logical, but a flat intonation keeps them from scoring high

* They express themselves clearly, but lose points for unclear pronunciation

TOEFL Speaking isn't writing an essay; it's “talking for someone to listen to.” Remember:

Making the listener comfortable and willing to keep listening is what counts!

---

How do you practice delivery?

1. Listen to plenty of high-scoring sample recordings to understand “what good delivery sounds like” (see my other posts)

2. Record yourself imitating them and compare with the high-scoring recordings

3. Build a stable logical structure so you can focus on delivery on test day

Every time I take TOEFL Speaking, I think about only one thing before I start talking: “deliver well.” Over ten tests, my average score is 29.3/30.

I believe that's not because my content is perfect. In fact, I often make small mistakes, or feel afterward that “something in what I just said had a hole in it.” The reason is that I make the rater “want to hear me keep talking”.

---

Many SK2 TOEFL students have proven this too.

As we put it, practicing content and stabilizing your structure early on is only so that “whatever the question, your delivery stays steady,” and that keeps your score steady too.

TOEFL Speaking is just the beginning. Later, in interviews and in conversations abroad, you'll need to pay even more attention to “delivery” if you want people to keep talking with you.

Come to SK2 TOEFL for David's intensive speaking class, or join the “last-minute speaking cram class,” and practice “English that makes people want to listen to you”!
