Did You Know 90% of Students Practice Reading the Wrong Way?

Hi everyone,

I'm Rosa from SK2. I often see students who have worked through 50-something TPO sets, some of them even a second time,

and their TOEFL scores are still inconsistent and never break 100.

That's very likely because they've been practicing reading the wrong way, so all that practice still doesn't help.

Take a look and see whether you're making any of these mistakes!

The four most common reading myths:

1. Doing a whole TPO set at once

When most students practice, they do a full TPO reading set every time, which means three passages in one go. But when you practice like this, you can't really review each passage's problems in detail, so your score easily bounces up and down. I suggest doing just one passage at a time and reviewing the question types and answer choices you tend to get wrong. You can also pull out the question types you often miss and practice them on their own. For example, if detail questions are the ones I miss most, I'll find ten detail questions to practice. That way you get familiar with the steps and tricks for each question type, and it's much more efficient. I recommend the TOEFL Xiaozhan (托福小站) app or the KMF (考满分) website. Both are very convenient and already sort the questions by type for you, so all you have to do is work through them!

2. Reading almost every word, down to the last detail

When students do reading, they usually just plow through it without any technique, trying to understand everything. When they hit details such as modifiers like subordinate clauses, adjective clauses and prepositional phrases, they want to understand those too. In fact, you don't need to read that closely. If you read everything, you'll find you can't remember any of it, and you often only understand it on the second read. Try reading only the key parts: the main clause of a sentence, the first sentence of a paragraph, and the transition words and attitude words. When you can grasp each paragraph's key points on the first read, that's when you've really understood the passage. Also, don't worry about forgetting details. If you get a detail question, just locate it and then read the details in that sentence. You don't need to keep the details in your head. Using scanning and skimming as the situation calls for is the most efficient way to read.

3. Going back to check every answer choice one by one

When students see the four answer choices, they often feel uneasy. Even when they already have an idea in mind, they still want to go back and check each choice one by one to confirm which is right. This wastes a lot of time and makes it easy to be misled by the choices. You'll find you get tricked every time, picking either a choice that over-infers or one that's too detailed and doesn't match the meaning of the passage. My suggestion: when you see the choices, use the idea in your head to eliminate options and pick the one closest to what you originally thought. If two choices are both pretty close to your idea, that's when you go back and reread that sentence. Note that even then, I still don't search the whole paragraph for the answer!

4. Looking up every word in the passage when reviewing

After finishing a passage, students usually focus on vocabulary and consider their review done once they've looked up all the words. That's the wrong idea, because TOEFL reading doesn't test your vocabulary. It tests how well you use structure to pick out the key points. When you review, try analyzing the key point of each paragraph and finding each paragraph's transition words and attitude words. That way, next time you do a new passage, you'll be able to pick out the key points and understand the meaning faster.

Now that you've seen these four wrong ways to practice reading, you may be asking: so how should I review reading?
