Did you know 90% of students practice listening the wrong way?

Hi everyone, I'm SK2 Rosa.

Lately I've noticed that many students work really hard and have gone through every TPO, yet their listening scores still aren't improving.

Most likely it's because they practice and review listening the wrong way. If so, no amount of practice questions will help.

Here are the four most common mistakes in how students practice and review:

1. Playing listening material as background music

Many students play English in the background while doing something else. That doesn't do much for your listening, because you aren't really thinking about what you hear. TOEFL listening tests your ability to pick out the main points, so I still recommend practicing focused listening and writing down the main point of each section afterward. That's how you gradually build the ability to summarize.

2. Listening to the whole thing in one go the second time

When students re-listen, they usually play the whole passage straight through, aiming to understand it. If the TOEFL let you listen again and again until you understood, that kind of practice would work. But on the TOEFL you answer after one listen, and you can't replay it. So this way of practicing doesn't work for TOEFL listening. On your second listen, go section by section, sort out the main points of each, and try to simplify your notes. That trains you to condense information, so the next time you listen for the first time, your notes will be leaner and more precise.

3. Reading the transcript while listening

When students hit something they can't understand, they usually read the transcript while listening. That only trains your reading, not your listening. Try as hard as you can to understand by listening, not by reading. When you can't follow a part, listen a few more times and work out its meaning from the context; if you still don't get it after 4 or 5 listens, then look at the transcript. At that point, focus on matching words to their sounds, and check whether you missed any signal words or key points.

4. Looking up every word afterward

Students often think reviewing means getting familiar with every word in the passage, so they look them all up one by one. Reviewing this way takes a lot of time but does little for your listening. TOEFL listening tests whether you can catch the main points, not how big your vocabulary is, so pay attention to where a word appears and how often. If a word is in a main clause, especially the verb or the object, and not knowing it hurts your overall understanding, then look it up. But if it sits somewhere unimportant and not knowing it doesn't affect your understanding, you don't need to bother. Also, if a word sounds familiar and keeps coming up, try guessing its meaning first, then look it up. That trains your ability to guess words, too!

Now that you've seen the most common mistakes, think about how you practice and adjust it,

and remember to practice listening this way:

1. When practicing TOEFL listening, practice picking out the main points

2. On the second listen, go section by section, sort out the main points and simplify your notes

3. Try to understand by listening before reading the transcript

4. Only look up words that affect your understanding

You may still be wondering: so how do I review listening efficiently?
