Write Your Own TOEFL Speaking Questions! (With Sample Answers)

Hi everyone, I'm David, co-founder of SK2 TOEFL (TOEFL iBT 119/120)

Recently I came across a recording I made a while back: two TOEFL Speaking questions I wrote for students to play with over Lunar New Year.

With the TOEFL changing again next year and the Speaking question types possibly shifting again, I think these two are pretty good for practice.

I'd also like to use this chance to remind everyone: you can write your own questions and record yourself to get more out of your prep!

Give it a try: read the question, think for 15 seconds, then answer for 45 seconds:

1. In what way would you choose to spend the New Year’s Eve?

To stay home, to go out with friends, or to join a house party?

Both are “everyday life” questions, the type TOEFL Speaking tests most often.

The current format is a choice between two options, but the test has also used three-option and open-ended questions in the past.

With next year's TOEFL changes, Speaking will very likely bring back these more open-ended question types.

So if you rely only on memorized templates or all-purpose sentences for today's questions, you may fall apart on the new question types.

When you practice, I suggest focusing more on:

👉 How to form your own position quickly

👉 How to organize your points and explain your reasons

👉 How to give convincing details

These are the abilities TOEFL Speaking really trains, and the basic communication skills you'll need to compete with others once you're abroad.
