Erasmus Mundus MaMaSELF Application Guide 🇪🇺 | The Offer Letter That Took Me to Europe
Hi everyone~ I'm Owen, and I like sharing my life through writing and music~ Welcome to my guide to applying for Erasmus MaMaSELF.
This post is mainly meant to help people who want to study in Europe, especially those thinking of applying for a dual degree. I hope to walk you through the EU joint degree program I applied to (the Erasmus Mundus Program) and how to prepare your application materials.
📍 Schools and results
Netherlands, TU Delft 🇳🇱 — Materials Science and Engineering: applied 10/18, accepted 12/02
Erasmus Mundus Program 🇩🇪🇫🇷🇮🇹🇵🇱 — MaMaSELF: applied 02/08, accepted 03/11 (first year at LMU Munich 🇩🇪 Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München; third semester at the University of Turin 🇮🇹 Università di Torino) (Decided)
Germany, Ruhr-Universität Bochum 🇩🇪 — Materials Science and Simulation: applied 03/11, accepted 03/23
Germany, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg 🇩🇪 — Elite Program Advanced Materials and Processes: applied 03/11, passed the first stage 03/15 (I'd already gotten into the ones I wanted, so I skipped the second-stage interview~~~)
This program is a dual degree designed for people with a materials science background or an interest in materials science research.Research mainly uses large-scale facilities such as synchrotron radiation, with a focus on developments and breakthroughs in energy. There are of course plenty of other interesting research topics, like 3D printing and fuel cells. Over the course of the program you get to choose three times, which gives students the flexibility to change direction and follow their own interests. On top of that, Erasmus MaMaSELF's international reputation and its relatively low tuition, which makes it great value, are among the reasons so many international students are eager to apply.
Here's a rough summary of the three choices:
First, when you apply, you choose the school you want to attend in your first year. There are five universities to choose from.
Second, you choose a different university for your third semester (it can't be in the same country). They'd like you to have this settled when you apply, but after you're admitted they ask again at the end of your first semester, and it's fine if your answer is completely different from your application.
Third, you choose the research institution for your master's thesis. In the third semester the program coordinator hands out a list of topics and the institutions that go with them, and you're free to pick a topic that interests you for your thesis.
