📍 Why study business analytics?

Overall, business analytics is a cross-disciplinary skill set that combines data technology, business strategy and communication, letting students use data to create value for companies. It helps us master the full process from data to decisions and builds data-driven business thinking.

📍 Who it suits:

① Students with a business background who want to improve their data skills (e.g. management, finance or economics majors)

② Students with a technical background who want to move into business (e.g. computer science, engineering or math majors)

③ People interested in data analysis and decision-making who want to drive business growth with data (and have taken a reasonable number of courses in quantitative methods, math and programming languages)

📍 Business analytics - what you'll get to learn:

① Data Analytics -> How to collect, organize, analyze and interpret data to support business decisions.

② Business & Finance -> How to extract valuable business insights from data and understand a company's business model, financial metrics and market strategy.

③ Data Science & Machine Learning-> Applying AI and data modeling for predictive analysis to make decisions more accurate.

④ Business Process & Problem Solving-> Learning to spot inefficient internal processes and propose data-driven improvements.

⑤ Communication & Presentation-> Learning to present your analysis to management clearly and persuasively through charts and reports.

💬 A working business analyst - a Manchester BASM alumna shares her view

🔸 Landing a business analytics job: do technical skills or soft skills matter more?

Take Manchester's MSc Business Analysis and Strategic Management (BASM): it involves a lot of case analysis of long- and short-term problems, with less math and data in the curriculum and more focus on organizational structure, business models, corporate culture and their effects. By comparison, the BAOR program goes deeper into data analysis tools such as SSRS, Tableau and database analysis.

Graduates of the two programs actually have similar job prospects. Most go into strategy roles or industry research at firms like McKinsey and the Big Four. The main difference is the department and responsibilities. For example, when I worked at Nielsen, I was mainly in the commercial department: 80% of my work was in Excel and PPT, and only the remaining 20% used SQL, because the main job was communicating data in business terms with different departments. BAOR graduates have more chances to move into roles like data engineer.

🔸 A business analyst's daily work

As a business analyst, the daily work includes data analysis as well as cross-department collaboration and strategy support. At the brand group, I handle retail data analysis and work closely with the brand, finance and strategy departments, discussing sales targets and digging into the data for insights that help the company adjust its strategy. At Nielsen, I worked more with the data modeling team, reviewing the models they provided, assessing whether they needed adjusting and making recommendations.

🔸 How to be more competitive

I'd suggest getting better at SQL, which really helps at work with data that excel can't handle. In recent years POWER BI, used for data visualization and able to automate and update data in real time, has been getting more and more attention in the industry, and interviews often ask whether you know POWER BI.

🔸 Is business analytics good for the long term?

Although brands are buying less business analytics from service providers like Nielsen, big brands also have their own inhouse BA/ BI roles, so you can try applying on the brand side. And the core skills of business analytics, such as logical thinking and data interpretation, are still in strong demand across departments. These skills improve business efficiency and strengthen strategic thinking, and in any industry the value of business analytics can't be ignored. So I think this career still has long-term potential.
