Three kinds of people who shouldn't study in Japan 🇯🇵

Studying in Japan really isn't as easy as people think

Today let's talk about who isn't suited to going to Japan, or even to studying abroad at all:

  1. People who can't set aside a block of time (2-3 years)

First, you need a decent foundation in Japanese, ideally N2 or above (it will take you more than a year to get there before you actually go). Studying abroad takes a lot of time and energy, and finishing a degree usually takes 2 to 3 years. If someone can't carve that time out of their life and can't commit fully to studying, you're probably not a good fit

  2. People who aren't willing to put time into studying (research)

If you want to build a long-term career in Japan, what you should be working toward is N2 + a university degree. You should have a clear plan for your goals, not just go to Japan to pick up another degree.

Life as an international student isn't just travel and cultural experiences. Academic standards in Japan are relatively strict, and you'll need to spend a lot of time on research. If someone isn't interested in academic work or isn't willing to put time into it, they may not be able to get good grades or academic results in Japan's learning environment.

  3. People who are easily influenced: people who waver easily

If you're often talked out of things by classmates, teachers or parents in Taiwan, I don't recommend studying abroad either. A few words from someone else could shake your resolve to go (Is it easy to find a job abroad these days? Is a Japanese degree any use in Taiwan?)

While adjusting to a new culture and way of life, if someone is easily swayed by outside influences and other people's opinions, you could well lose sight of your goals during your studies in Japan.

In short, studying in Japan isn't for everyone. If someone can't set aside enough time, isn't willing to put time into studying, or is easily influenced by others, you may run into a lot of difficulties. Studying abroad takes full commitment, and only people who are prepared, determined and able to overcome difficulties are suited to studying in Japan.
