After-class practice

I'm on the lazy side, so before my first TOEFL I took the last-minute cram classes for Writing and Speaking. For the 14 days before the test I practiced both sections every day, and a teaching assistant graded my homework so I could see where I needed to improve. Before my first TOEFL, I really only practiced for those two weeks and then took the test.

Listening

The question-predicting Chris teaches in class is a great way to practice: by predicting questions, you check whether you've mastered the 8 key points and the direction TOEFL questions take. It's fine if your guesses aren't accurate at first. After reading the questions, go back and listen for why that question was asked and find the 8 key points. You'll always find some hints about what gets tested.

Reading

Reading was the section I had a relatively good handle on, so my goal was to lock in my score there. I started by studying the handouts on the nine question types until I knew them well, got familiar with how to scan and skim, and used SK2's teaching articles to master how to solve each question type while keeping up speed and accuracy. At the same time, I trained myself to catch the key points calmly and confidently and answer accurately even on unfamiliar subjects and topics. Personally, I think this approach isn't only helpful for TOEFL prep; it's also very practical for the English contracts and documentation I deal with at work.

Speaking

Speaking was the section I was least sure about. When I started practicing, I often couldn't come up with content for the independent task, and my integrated answers lacked structure, so I put relatively more effort into Speaking. SK2's intensive course gave me answer structures and a way to prepare a word bank, which gave my prep more direction. I also think the cloud resources are very important: by studying how consultants and high scorers answer and structure their notes, I designed my own answer templates and worked out how to use intonation. Li-Yi's transformation tool was also very helpful in my prep.

SK2 TOEFL will keep sharing more high-score stories in this series

Stay tuned, everyone ❤️
